FIRE DETECTION

Fire detection systems are designed to discover fires early in their development and notify building occupants for emergency evacuation. A series of interconnected sensors and monitoring devices operate together to initiate full fire mode functions.

These include:

  • Emergency Warning System

  • Fire and Smoke Door Systems

  • Building Management Systems (BMS / Lift Controller / Automatic Door Controllers)

  • Mechanical Ventilation Systems (HVAC / Stair Pressurisation / Air Conditioning / Smoke Spill etc)

  • Alarm Signalling Equipment (ASE – Fire Brigade Alarm Signal)

Types of Fire Detection systems:

  • Analogue addressable/conventional "point" detection systems

  • Flame and infrared detection systems

  • Beam detection systems

  • Aspirated smoke detection systems (ASD)

Types of  Emergency Warning Systems:

  • Building occupant warning systems (BOWS / Alarm and Evacuation Tone Generation)

  • Sound Systems for Emergency Purposes (SSEP) formally known as Early Warning and Intercommunication Systems (EWIS)

An automatic fire detection system is a requirement under the BCA, and shall be designed and installed to Australian Standard AS1670. These systems require an inspection and test in accordance with AS1851 – of monthly, six monthly, yearly & 5-yearly intervals.
